Transitional Homes

Starting with one home in 2001, this program has grown to nine renovated, single-family homes, in the City of Gary.  Ranging from 1000 sq. ft. to 1500 sq. ft. , these homes provide free housing for families with all utilities paid for up to two years. During this period the families receive debt elimination, financial management, and home maintenance counseling. The program’s success is evident:  16 families enrolled since its inception, 14 completed, 11 were successful in meeting financial independence goals, and 8 have secured home ownership.

In 2011 the first women’s transitional house opened at 2011 Lincoln Street in Gary, Indiana. This residence accommodates four women who meet with a counselor every month.  During their maximum stay of six months, these women receive job seeking, job retention, financial management, and personal development training and counseling.  Furthermore, the women perform eight hours of volunteer services per week. Ideally, the goal of the program is to restore these women to a prosperous life and to secure stable living accommodations.

In 2011 the first men’s transitional house opened at 2363 Industrial Blvd. in Gary, Indiana.  This residence accommodates three men, and during their maximum stay of six-months, these men receive job seeking, job retention, financial management, and personal development training and counseling.  A counselor meets monthly with the male residents.  Additionally, the men perform eight hours of volunteer services per week.  Ultimately, the goal of the program is to restore these men to a prosperous life and to secure stable living accommodations.
